For those of you who don’t know, I’m a librarian as well as a travel agent. I read A LOT. I’m the chair of the New Hampshire Teen Book Awards Committee which means I read A LOT of young adult books. A pretty big trend in YA right now is fairy tale retellings, and I have a new favorite that is a MUST READ, especially for Beauty and the Beast fans!

A Curse So Dark and Lonely by Brigid Kemmerer is a beautiful, fast-paced, enchanting retelling of Beauty and the Beast. My favorite part? The Belle character is strong and witty and fierce! She is inspiring and I wish I could be her bestie. There’s also a pretty unique take on the curse and the Beast character. I really enjoyed both aspects. There’s a little bit of a love triangle, and a great twist at the end that I didn’t see coming until about 10 pages before it happened.
I devoured this book. I read it in two days. I literally could not put it down. I stayed up all night finishing it the second night because I couldn’t imagine going to bed without knowing the ending. And I’m impatiently waiting for January 2020 to read the second book in the trilogy.
Brigid’s writing is wonderful. Her pacing is perfect and her characters jump off the page. I can’t wait to read the next two books and see how these characters continue to grow and fight and love and challenge each other.
If you need a good page-turner for your next vacation, or just a great read to get you through the winter, definitely pick this one up at your local library or book store. You won’t be disappointed.
After you read it, come back here and tell me what you thought! I’d love to hear from you.
